If you want to be brave
And reach for the top of the sky
And the farthest point on the horizon
Do you know who you'll meet there
Great soldiers and seafarers,
Artists and dreamers
Who need to be close, close to the light
They need to be in danger of burning by fire
And I, I want to get there
I, I want to be one,
One who is touched by the sun,
One who is touched by the sun
Often I want to walk
The safe side of the street
And lull myself to sleep
And dull my pain
But deep down inside I know
I've got to learn from the greats,
Earn my right to be living,
Let my wings of desire
Soar over the night
I need to let them say
"She must have been mad"
And I, I want to get there
I, I want to be one,
One who is touched by the sun,
One who is touched by the sun
I've got to learn from the greats,
Earn my right to be living,
With every breath that I take,
Every heartbeat
And I, I want to get there
I, I want to be one,
One who is touched by the sun,
One who is touched by the sun.

That was a brilliant (unintended pun?) post about your eclipse experience, Robert. Even a dedicated non-traveller like myself might be seduced into leaving these shores for such a spectacle! Also, thanks for reminding me how wonderful Carly Simon was/is - hadn't heard that song since can't remembr when....Altogether, a most uplifting post - it was good to be transported from this wet, grey Cumbrian landscape if only for a few minutes.
Thank you, Celia, I'm pleased that you enjoyed it. If you decide to travel to see the 2008 eclipse you may like to know that the nearest, and probably most convenient location is the capital city of Siberia, Novosibirsk, which lies plumb on the path of totality. All manner of holiday arrangements are available.
Well, Siberia might be a step too far for me!! But will you two be going?
Merci, Marie. Oui, l'éclipse totale du soleil en 1999 était en 11 août. Je l'observais en sud Devon, Royaume-Uni, mais le temps faisait couvert.
Celia, that's very funny! At the risk of provoking an escalation I think you will agree that, unless you go by the Trans-Siberian Railway, a few steps are but a mere flight. Will we be going to Novosibirsk? I don't know but I'm thinking about it
